The Lagrain Cup is a biennial international football competition contested by the senior women's national teams of the members of the regional associations of Kvaenna, Skathia, and Avidna.

The first tournament began in 1592, following the 1592 Women's SIFA World Cup. The competition largely replaces the international friendly matches previously played by national teams of those football federations.

The Lagrain Cup is held every two years.

The last champions were Goldecia, who won the 1596-1597 Lagrain Cup by defeating Sequoia 1-0 in the final in Almaniania to win their first title.

History

In Septem 1588, Nylander Football Association President Stellan Lassgard confirmed that talks had been held to create an international tournament between national teams from the Skathian and Kvaennan federations, who were concerned that their regional tournaments and world cup qualifiers were not competitive enough, and also aiming to reduce the number of friendly matches established by the SIFA Calendar. Months later, the Avidnan Federation showed interests in joining the talks.

The concept of the Lagrain Cup would see all Skathian, Kvaennan, and Avidnan member associations' national teams divided in a series of groups based upon a ranking formulated using their recent results, where they would be promoted and relegated to other groups according to their results within the group. The proposed tournament would take place on dates on the International match calendar that are currently allocated for international friendlies and would not affect the SIFA World Cup or the Skathian or Kvaennan championships.

On Septem 1590, Skathian Football Association general secretary Martin Olsen stated that one of the benefits of the proposal would be to help less glamorous national associations arrange games, as well as improving the competence of non-Brigidnan national teams.

The first Lagrain Cup started in late 1592, with the Lagrain Final Four being held in Nyland. Hylis, which defeated Bisica in the final, became the first national team to win the Lagrain Cup.

Format

The four group winners from League A will qualify for the finals, to be played in...

The national teams of the federations of Skathia, Kvaenna, and Avidna are divided into three divisions (called "Leagues"): 12 teams in League A, 12 teams in League B, and 14 teams in League C. In each league, four groups are formed (three or four teams in each group) and teams play each other both home and away.

In the top league, League A, the winners of the four groups go on to play in the Lagrain Cup Final Four, with two semifinals and one final to decide which teams becomes the Lagrain Cup champion.

Teams can also be promoted and relegated to a higher or lower league. Each group winner (there are four groups in each league) except for League A, who will go on to play in the Lagrain Cup Final Four, is automatically promoted to the next higher league for the next tournament. Each team placing last in its group, except for League C, is automatically relegated to the next lower league.
