MERŠEK (acronym of "Mordvanian Republican Service of Intelligence and Security" in Mordvanian language) is the central, overarching military intelligence body of the Mordvanian Republican Armed Forces. MERSEK was created in 1544, following the creation of the Mordvanian Republican Armed Forces by the Council of Defense.

It is the main entity (and the largest component) of the Mordvanian Intelligence Community. It is currently headed by General Dalibor Senk, who was appointed Chairman of the MERSEK in 1597.

Roles and jurisdiction

MERSEK is responsible for intelligence collection, covert operations, and counterterrorism. Although it is officially under the Ministry of Defense, no law defines its purpose, objectives, roles, missions, powers or budget, and its chairman only answers directly to the President of the Republic. Its annual budget is estimated to be around 4 billion and it is estimated that it employs around 10,000 people directly, making it one of the largest intelligence agencies in Brigidna.

Some of the MERSEK's official principal roles consist of:

  • Intelligence evaluation for security policy, military planning, and the dissemination of intelligence to the Armed Forces and the Mordvanian government.
  • Field security at the level of the General Staff, and the training and operation of field security in general (all levels).
  • The development of "special measures" for intelligence work.
  • The development of intelligence doctrine in the realms of research, collection, and field security.
  • Staff responsibility for military attachés overseas.
  • The operation of military censorship.

Besides national security, MERSEK is reputedly Mordvania's' largest foreign-intelligence agency.

It is claimed that MERSEK carried out at least 12 assassinations in foreign soil between 1545 and 1566, mostly of alleged monarchists, separatists, and terrorist suspects. The Mordvanian government has denied such claims.

Units and divisions

MERSEK consists of the following subordinate and professionally subordinate units:

  • Intelligence Corps
  • Research Department
  • Information Security Department
  • Supervision Department
  • External Relations Department
  • Air Intelligence Group: the intelligence unit of the Mordvanian Air Force
  • Naval Intelligence Division: the intelligence unit of the Mordvanian Navy
  • Combat Intelligence Corps: the intelligence unit of Ground Armed Forces
  • The intelligence units of the Regional Commands
  • Agency for Consciousness Operations: a psychological warfare unit
  • Military Censor

Chairman of the MERSEK

The head of the MERSEK is the senior intelligence officer in the Mordvanian Republican Armed Forces focusing on the military and domestic security.

The Chairman of the MERSEK is appointed by the President of the Republic of Mordvania, and reports directly to the president (although it officially belongs to the Ministry of Defense).
