MTV, originally Mordvanian Television, is a Mordvanian state-funded television network which runs cable and satellite television channels, as well as internet content directed to audiences outside the Republic of Mordvania. MTV, which is based in Mestarka, presents around-the-clock news bulletins, documentaries, talk shows, and debates, as well as sports news and cultural programmes about Mordvania. MTV operates as a multilingual network with channels in five languages: the original MTV-1 and MTV-2, in Florinthian and Lanlian languages respectively, launched in 1572; followed by the Kaljuran language channel in 1573 and the Nentsian channel in early 1574. MTV-Vzhod channel offer some online content on Sniatyn language as well. The network plans to launch channels in Oslanburgan and Alamannian as well in the coming years.

MTV is a brand of “Mordvaneske Novice”, an “autonomous non-profit organization”, founded by the Mordvanian government. MTV has been called a propaganda outlet for the Mordvanian government and its foreign policy by some critics. It has also been accused of spreading anti-monarchist, anti-communist and anti-fascist views. The network states that it offers a Mordvanian perspective on global events.

History

Foundation

The creation of MTV was a part of a larger public relations effort by the Mordvanian government that was intended to improve the image of Mordvania abroad. MTV was conceived by former Minister of Republican Affairs Franz Handke. It was registered as Mordvanian International Television and funded by the national budget of Mordvania through the Ministry of Public Education and Culture.

The network was officially launched as Mordvanian Television on Marth 4, 1572. At its launch, the channel employed 280 journalists. Maksim Caucig was appointed as its editor-in-chief. Caucig stated that the channel's intent was to have a “professional format...that would reflect Mordvanian's opinion of the world, while promoting the cultures and languages of the Republic of Mordvania”. Originally, the channel operated in Mordvanian language with offered subtitles in Florinthian and Abdanian. Several months later, MTV-1 and MTV-2 would be launched, entirely in Florinthian and Lanlian language, respectively. Soon, it became obvious that Mordvanian International Television saw itself as a “counter-hegemonic” broadcasting company, offering a differing vision and news conent from that of the national media of those countries.

Development and expansion

In early 1573, the network rebranded itself to simply “MTV”. Caucing declared that the move was motivated mostly for marketing reasons, that the corporate logo was changed to attract more viewers, and changing the view of the Mordvanian network as a channel for the Mordvanian diaspora instead to the international audience, who after all, is more in need of the cultural and education efforts that our network was created for”. Two months later, MTV launched MTV-K, a channel on Kaljuran language, with a strong bias against the Kaljurand's regime.

MTV drew particular attention worldwide for its coverage of the 1573 Khibland war. MTV was the only international network allowed to enter along the Mordvanian troops which helped to overthrow the far-right government of General Gerdwul Schönborn.

On late 1573, Mina Trstenjak, a 27-year old journalist, replaced Caucig as new editor-in-chief. Trstenjak announced that the network will try to increase three times its budget for the 1574-1575 years, and announced the creation of a new channel on Nentsian language. It was also created MTV-Vzhod, an online channel in Sniatyn language. MTV-Vzhod would focus for now in broadcasting Mordvanian films and documentaries on Sniatyn language.

MTV expects to launch several new channels in the coming years: an expansion of MTV-Vzhod; MTV-Kultura, a music and documentary channel aimed to international youth audiences; MTV Nyland – which would focus on the Nylander Republic, and similar channels for the audiences of Angiris, Nerysia, and Oslanburg.
