The New Wilmington Republic, commonly known as the Wilmington Republic, romantically as the Lone Star Republic and less often as simply Wilmington, is a small country of less than 5 million people, situated on the northern coast of eastern Skathia. Over 70% of the population lives in and around the capital, New Wilmington.
The country originated as a colony of a Florinthian city state, before peacefully gaining independence in 1454. Prior to the the Florinthians' arrival, the area was inhabited by a few aboriginal tribes.
Wilmington is a nominally a unitary presidential republic, though is in practice an oligarchic police state. It is a surprisingly ethnically diverse nation, seeing immigration from various Brigidnan states for much of its history. Florinthian and Lanlian are the officially languages.
It is a country developed country and one of the wealthiest countries in the world, per capita. It has a high Human Development Index.

Etymology
The New Wilmington Republic was named after the capital city, New Wilmington, which itself was named after a city in Florinthus. A citizen of the country is a "Wilmingtoner", while "Wilmington" is often used adjectivally, such as in "Wilmington Republic", and "Wilmington forces".
